Wearing
patterned clothing may feel loud if you are a bit of a wallflower, but
if you sport prints on the regular, you should certainly have the
audacity to embrace mixing them. While we are all for encouraging
risk-taking, it helps to have a blueprint for which patterns should
stand solo and which can be combined with differing designs.
We reached out to Jena Covello, who assists
celebrity stylist Ryan Hasting on dressing some of the most fashionable
A-listers, like Jennifer Aniston and Rosamund Pike, for her tips and
advice on pattern play.
STRIPES
Jena is a fan of fall’s trendy celestial print creations, as seen on Jamie Chung, which she recommends pairing with a narrow pinstripe. Alternately, try chevron with classy houndstooth for a look that even works in the office.

TRY:
Saint Laurent Star Print Drape Insert Dress ($2690) with Cole Haan Cyro Pinstripe Snake Embossed Leather Sandals ($355).
Rag & Bone Chester Chevron-Print Silk Dress ($495) with Saint Laurent Black & White Houndstooth Blazer ($3550).
FLORALS
“If you’re going for a floral, stick to a small print or something that’s mixed with a small polka dot or stripe,” Jena advises. Diane Kruger nails this combination.

TRY:
J. Crew Collection Tropical Floral Pants ($288) with Equipment Brett Striped Silk-Crepe Shirt ($250).
Giamba Floral Jacquard Skirt ($650) with TopshopArchive Collection Polka Dot Blouse ($70).
CHECKS
Ch-ch-check out Solange Knowles’ astute pattern-mixing. With houndstooth, Jena prefers combining two different sizes for a bit of dimension, just like Scarlett Johansson.

TRY:
Romwe White Black Long Sleeve Houndstooth Dress With Belt ($28) with 7 For All Mankind Long Houndstooth Coat ($350).
Theory Treeca CL Micro Houndstooth Pants ($285) with 3.1 Phillip Lim Fringe Hem Blouse ($450).
ANIMAL PRINTS
“Wild leopards and snakeskins can be too overbearing when worn together,” Jena warns. Instead, pair animal prints with a geometric partner like Margot Robbie.

TRY:
Gianvito Rossi 85 Leopard-Print Calf Hair Pumps ($945) with Elisa B. Geometric Ruffle Belted Dress ($18).
MICHAEL Michael Kors Cap-Sleeve Snakeskin-Print Dress ($75) with Fendi Geometric Bird Baguette Bag ($4000).
