Jill Scott On Being Real: ‘It’s What Soul Music Is All About’

When it comes to soul singers, Jill Scott is at the top of my list. That voice…those lyrics…her style…i just love everything about her.
Not only is Scott hitting the stage at tonight’s Soul Train Awards, (hosted by the incomparable Erykah Badu) the vocal Goddess is poised to receive the first-ever Lady Of Soul award.
Jill opened up about receiving the honor, calling it a “privilege.” “This is all so beautiful,” she added. “Being recognized it a wonderful thing. To know that I’m making progress and steps to be apart of American History, it feels good to me. It feels like a little pat on the back.”
Despite her well-decorated trophy case (that includes three Grammy Awards) Jill still gets excited over every award she wins.

“Every award has taken my breath away. I’m not really expecting anything, the goal was to be like Frankie Beverly – they can perform whenever they feel like it. It’s been 30 years since Frankie Beverly and Maze had an album but we’re gonna go… To create a career where people will come no matter how old I get.”
The Golden singer didn’t exactly prepare an acceptance speech, but that’s all apart of her soulful allure. “I don’t know what’s going to happen…but I’m going to be emotional about it,” she revealed. “It’s one of those moments when you look out in front of all your peers that you love, respect and admire and they’re saying good job and congratulations. I don’t know what’s going to happen to my little heart. If I rehearse the feeling out of it, I don’t really want to do it. That’s what soul music is all about. It’s the gut of the thing. It’s being in the moment and allowing yourself to be genuine.”
