If you run back all of Janet Jackson’s many transformative and groundbreaking beauty moments, you’ll find yourself smiling perhaps a day or two from now: she truly does have that many gorgeous looks. From her showstopping ponytails in “Got Til It’s Gone” to her sleek, straight hair in “Pleasure Principle”, we could essentially go on and on about the way she’s reinvented herself throughout the decades. Here we shall, just a bit.

The simultaneous grace and power of her dance moves, the sweetness of her melodic voice that oft never reaches above a whisper, the strength of her chiseled abs and cheekbones: she’s a force to be reckoned with and a veritable icon. Halloween just passed and over twenty years later, so many young women still dressed up as her character Justice in famed Poetic Justice—long box braids and all.

And though we write about trends day-in and day-out, Janet never has to abide by them: mostly because she’s in the business of setting them, effortlessly. She’s sensuality, vulnerability, art, and elegance all wrapped up into one.

A lady is said to never reveal her age, but when 49 looks this good, it’s something you should shout from the rooftops. She’s back at the top of the charts yet again with her latest album Unbreakable, taking it back to her soft auburn curls, statement-making jewelry, and loose trousers.
