Show Review: Prabal Gurung Fall 2014.

For his latest Fall 2014 collection, Prabal Gurung pulls inspiration from the small republic of Mustang in the Himalayas, a locale only opened to foreign visitors twenty-two years ago. That influence is palpable in the lineup’s astrakhan-inspired outerwear and its layered and draped ensembles: a feminine take on the traditional garb of the villagers as well as Buddhist monks. The color palette runs the gamut from pristine winter white to the fiercest reds.

Fur vests, cropped chubbies with leather trim, a Mongolian lamb collar knee-length coat, collarless numbers blending suede and pieced fur: as we’ve seen in other collections thus far, outerwear is strong, powerful, and luxe for the season. The fuzzy texture makes quite the sartorial declaration when paired with draped chiffon skirts exposing a great deal of thigh and beaded strappy sandals.

If we can be sure of anything, it’s that Gurung will always give an eye-catching print. He does just here, sprawling tapestry patterns on on-trend sweatshirts, those aforementioned draped skirts (if you were wondering, thighs are in for autumn), functional printed trousers, office-appropriate button-front shirts, and intricately draped tops.

If your style is more pared-down and minimal, not to worry: there are a number of pieces in the selection that still radiate power, control, and high-fashion without being over the top. I am captivated by the way simple turtlenecks are layered under classic knits and silky blouses, the ease of oversized collar coats, and the structure yet femininity of suits with satin-detailed blazers and pleated trousers.

The sultriness factor is turned all the way up with cutout dresses and come hither feather skirts. We can count on Ciara trying on these looks for size post-pregnancy.

With the Oscars and Cannes Film Festival still to come this year, Gurung would have been remiss to not present some show-stopping gowns. These are definitely head turners with embroidered bodices, cutout detailing, bright hues, and thigh-high slits. I am looking forward to seeing Kerry Washington, Lady Gaga, and Sarah Jessica Parker in these designs before year’s end.
