In 1937, Helen Williams was born in East Riverton, New Jersey where she developed an early appreciation for fashionable duds. At the tender age of seven, the young talent started to create and sew her own clothes. As she matured, Williams’s teenage years also brought about more personal evolution – through her extensive study of dance, art and drama, she eventually landed a job as a New York stylist at a photography studio. It seems modeling was not the planned career path for the stunning style maven; however, after the consistent urging of stars including Lena Horne, she took the plunge. Williams struggled throughout her early modeling years as she battled against the racial confounds within the American society, working solely with black magazines including Ebony and Jet, the up-and-comer famously revealed, “I was too dark to be accepted.”

After moving to Paris, her career began its ascent and there was no turning back! Williams was definitely a trailblazer in the fashion realm while paving the way for light-skinned models but it was her infectious and classic style that captured the attention of notable style enthusiasts. From her signature bouffant to her enviable features, the woman was nothing short of iconic! In most of her photos, you can get a sense of her conservative and ladylike approach to personal style. She could rock everything from flared midi skirts to bold, structural silhouettes while making it all look so surprisingly effortless! Through her enigmatic presence, this Vintage Vision continues to inspire woman everywhere. Side note: Talk about eyebrows ON FLEEK!
