J.W. Anderson Pre-Fall 2015.

What J.W. Anderson does best is present recognized and well-known shapes and silhouettes with a sometimes awry and distorted spin. His Pre-Fall 2015 borrowed from a number of different decades with loads of texture, utilitarian pockets, chic blouses, and a 90’s flair that wasn’t always wearable, but was surely impossible to resist.

Trousers were a focus in the collection and they came in a number of iterations including navy with pleated detailing, high-waisted with functional pockets, in corduroy with contrast velvet cuffs, and in leather for a chic spin on the edgy texture.

Legs also had their moment in the collection with a felt-embroidered mini skirt, belt-accented, thigh-baring numbers anchored with patent heeled loafers, a teddy-bear inspired belted skater dress that was practically made for a young Hollywood starlet, and a floral jersey cloqué frock in the same aforementioned silhouette.

A Pre-Fall assortment isn’t complete without a little outerwear and that was present on a cozy bomber jacket, a white double-breasted coat with an exaggerated and oversized shawl collar and empire seamed waist for a retro-inspired silhouette, a cropped fur coat cinched at the waist and with scrunched sleeves, and a chocolate leather trench given some panache with artful, amorphous buttons.

This was one of Anderson’s best yet and it was evident why his refusal to agree with fashion’s norms and trends have garnered him such an ardent cadre of brand aficionados that are simply wild about his designs. At times, the textiles were random, but never accidental and the dimensions were bizarre, but they made you think and truly observe. The pairings were intelligent, but simultaneously exciting and sharp — refreshing to see a designer go against the grain and be confident and steady in that commitment to the unbeaten path.
