Lee Daniels and his team are planning to shake things up a
little–both onscreen and behind the scenes–when “Empire” returns for
season 2.
The hit FOX drama has been dominating our Wednesday nights for the
last 11 weeks, and it only continues to expand its audience as ratings
rise every single week. With just one episode left in the season it
seems that Lee and his producing partner Danny Strong have tapped into
the formula for success with “Empire.”
Whether its fans counting down until the next episode or stars dying
to make a guest appearance, people can’t get enough of “Empire.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s
profile on Lee, the show is also drawing a lot of interest from his
contemporaries as some have inquired about helping out behind the
scenes. Specifically, Spike Lee has asked about directing an episode
next season.
There’s also chatter that producers are looking to diversify the
writing staff. The current staff has undoubtedly got the chops to create
compelling scripts, but Danny is supposedly on the hunt for
up-and-coming Black writers.
Speaking of guest stars, though, Lee would love for Oprah Winfrey to
make an appearance on the show at some point. He’s been campaigning for
his good friend O to do a guest spot on “Empire,” and he joked that he
may be wearing her down. We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed for
that…or maybe someone should start a hashtag campaign. Work on that,
Black Twitter!
In the meantime, Lee is considering expanding the world that appears
on “Empire.” For the most part, the Lyons live in a world of opulence,
but it wasn’t always that way. They had to struggle, and Lee is thinking
of taking a look at back at where they came from.
One thing we can definitely count on, though, is that Lee and company
will have a lot more time to explore the world of “Empire” as the show
will likely have a longer run when it returns. Lee and Danny can’t
decide whether they’ll stick to 12 episodes or 22 episodes. Lee doesn’t
want to do 22 episodes, but he’s open to tacking on a few more shows for
season 2!
They’ll have plenty of time to hammer out the details since “Empire”
isn’t expected to return until 2016. We don’t know if we can go that
long without seeing Cookie and the crew, but we’ll find a way to
survive.
