That Serena Williams is one of the most important athletes of our
time is often overlooked in my opinion. The fact that she is a Black
woman who is all about her game, is enough to get me off my seat and do
my happy dance. In the latest greatest achievement by the amazing tennis
player, she won the French open in three sets 6-3, 6-7, 6 -2, beating
the Czech Republic’s Lucie Šafářová. Although it wasn’t a clean sweep,
Williams was clearly the better player throughout the entire game, and
it came as little surprise to people watching the game that she ended up
with the win.It was however not an easy win for Williams as she narrowly lost the second set to Šafářová, giving her opponent a bit of hope. But the third set proved to be a relatively simple victory for Williams. This brings Williams her 20th major grand slam title, making her only two short of the all-time record of 22, which is currently held by Germany’s Steffi Graph. At 33, we’d say that Williams has a couple more years in her to not only equal that record but set a new one by a few titles. For now, congrats Serena, keep making us proud!
