I love a good trend report and fall is our favorite time to flex. Bring on the new-new! Summer beauty trends tend to lean toward playful bursts of color and enviable skin, but leave it to fall to reel things back in. And for the lipstick-obsessed, fall is the only season that matters. Global Makeup Educator Danessa Myricks explains: “After an effortless season of summer, women crave the return of drama. She’s looking to make a statement. She’s not settling quietly into a dewy balm or gloss. It’s quite the opposite. She’s been low-key beauty for months, so now it’s time to up the ante…and the answer is lipstick.”

This fall, lips are trending in a major way. From pitch black and vivid purples to bulletproof stains, lipstick has truly reached a point of ‘no limit’ this season. Read on as we share fall 2016’s hottest lipstick trends to try in the coming weeks and beyond.
FADE TO BLACK
Never thought we’d see this one go mainstream, but it’s officially a thing and darn it — it’s gorgeous! Now, is this the lip that you’re going to wear to your 9-to-5 accounting job (Do you work for BuzzFeed?)? Probably not. But, outside of that, the options are limitless: Brunch with the girls, barhopping, girls night out. Come on, live just this once!
If you can’t pull the trigger on flat, matte black – go with (1.) Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Nayeon ($21). The stark black with shimmery flecks of gunmetal grey make this a ‘wearable’ black.

Feeling like a boss? Kick it old school with one of the first black lip products to have ever done it, (2.) Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Tarred ($16). This is black, black, and nothing but the black. The added touch of hemp and peppermint oil gives this opaque liquid lipstick a very unique tingle. It’s also vegan. And did we mention that this product is sort of legendary?…So, you’ll also earn cool points for wearing it.
BACK TO BERRY
The trend that never dies: berry. If it’s fall, berry is on-trend. “It’s the one shade that most women universally embrace. One is never too fair or too deep to pull off a gorgeous berry.” adds Danessa.

Ease your way in with a sheer berry like (3.) Bare Minerals Gen Nude Radiant Lipstick in Queen ($20). The sangria-like shade flatters all skin tones from light to dark.
For a bolder berry, (4.) Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid in Berry Boost ($8) applies like a gloss but sets to a super pigmented, shine-free lipstick. With double the color payoff of a traditional bullet, your lipstick is guaranteed to stay put all day long.
PURPLE REIGN
A perfect match for olive and dark skin tones, purple is having a major moment this fall. “Try to not be too literal.” advises Danessa. “Consider rich tones of raspberry, which offers a bit more wearability.”

(5.) Stila Stay All Day Matte’ificent Lipstick in Framboise ($22) is a great starter-purple. It’s deep enough to make an impact, but subtle enough for said impact to not be scary.
Want full throttle purple? Try (6.) Nyx Simply Vamp Lip Cream in Temptress ($5), a seductive jewel-toned purple that applies rich and creamy with a single swipe.
SEND NUDES

Now’s the time to master your most natural shade of nude. When selecting, go with the shade that resembles your complexion, but a tad bit warmer. This shade will provide just enough contrast so that you don’t look washed out. Because nude is so complexion-driven, there’s no such thing as a universal nude, but we have our favs: For fair to light skin tones, try (7.) Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo in Shade 03 ($32). The mauvey, blush tone is very flattering. For a medium or tan complexion, (8.) The Estée Edit by Estée Lauder The Barest Lip Color in So Bare ($22) applies like a balm but wears like a cushiony lipstick. For dark to deep skin tones, try a medium brown like (9.) Covergirl Queen Collection Stay Luscious Lipstick in Monarch ($9). The creamy texture is waterproof and doesn’t budge. Swipe, swipe, and you’re good to go!
STAIN IT

For color that allows the natural lip to come through, rock a stain. And not just any stain…K-beauty your situation with (10.) Cle Cosmetics Melting Lip Powder ($20). You’ve never seen a lip stain technology quite like this. Enriched with nourishing vitamin E, the long wear tint applies as a powder and transforms into a liquid on the lip. It’s magic! Cherry red is the shade to own for fall. For a drugstore option, we like (11.) Maybelline Lip Studio Colorblur Cream Matte Pencil and Smudger in Cherry Cherry Bang Bang ($9). The cool thing about this lippie is that you can adjust the level of tint and coverage. Use the smudger tip to go from sweet and demure to matte and edgy. The choice is yours.
