Jonathan Simkhai Ready-to-Wear Fall 2015.

Jonathan Simkhai had one clear inspiration in mind for his Fall 2015 Ready-to-Wear collection presented today at MADE Fashion Week in New York: a life electric. Full of reflective materials and miles of wire detailing, Simkhai’s collection shared a dynamic narrative of what it means to be a woman on-the-go.

Many of his pieces utilized mesh netting sewn in delicate jumpers, seaweed tendrils that plastered the bodice of dresses, and intricate braiding that resembled nicely organized wires on a circuit board. Black and white proved dominant players in the color palette, but slivers of grey, peach, tan and even pink made their appearance in a number of ankle length dresses and light coats.

As has become the new fashion, Simkhai showed a number of crop blouses and high-waisted skirts in multi-composite fabrics. However, instead of over-exposing the female form, Simkhai opted for more tactful ensembles and featured smart cutouts and sheer overlays to show, without screaming, sex appeal.

A few of my favorite looks were the sort of “X marks the spot” pieces – in halter tops, bralettes, and a divine off-shoulder black sheer gown that appeared to hug all of the right curves. A super black tee dress that casually draped at the top and tightened into a criss-cross fitted skirt followed swiftly behind.

In any debut presentation, I am always on the lookout for how a designer describes their creative muse. Who is she and where is she going? If I’m down with the woman, I’m down with the brand. Based on this morning’s presentation, Simkhai is speaking – loud and clear – to a woman ready to stand out. His woman appreciates the element of subtlety, but is confident in her ability to command the attention of any room.
