She may be “Jilly from Philly” to most, but there’s no denying that Jill Scott is a globally-renowned powerhouse. From her smooth vocals to her luminous skin, her beauty radiates from the inside out. Her megawatt smile and bubbly personality only add to it all.
As you might already know, the neo soul singer and actress was born in Northern Philadelphia — raised by her mother and grandmother. She’s revealed in a few interviews that her childhood was full of love and happiness and she still has an incredibly close connection to the two most important women in her life until this day.
Though Jill had plans to be a high school English teacher and even put in a few years at Temple University, she ultimately started honing her performance craft as a spoken word artist. She has QuestLove to thank for her rise on the scene as he was the one who discovered her — ultimately asking Jill to join The Roots in the studio. The collaboration led to Scott co-writing the group’s hit song “You Got Me” along with Erykah Badu which earned them a Grammy. From there, she worked with artists like Common and Eric Benet and put in some time onstage traveling throughout Canada with a production of the hit Broadway musical, Rent.
Her debut album “Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1″ was released in 2000, which spawned hit tune “A Long Walk”. Jill’s words finally became tangible keepsakes with The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours: a compilation of her poems which was published just five years later. She has also racked up some GRAMMY Awards, as well as solidifying her place as a bonafide actress in including Why Did I Get Married? and hit HBO TV show The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency. Is there anything Jill cannot do well? It doesn’t seem so.
Jill’s beauty choices are just as distinct and dynamic as her artistic talents. She can serve you a powerful afro one day and an edgy short haircut the next. From brunette to platinum blonde, she can rock a number of hues and pull each and every one off with little to no effort. She likes to continue to push the envelope with her hair and constantly reinvent herself — a source of endless inspiration for us all.
