When one thinks of black women designers, a few household names come to mind: Tracy Reese and Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs of Cushnie et Ochs among them. But there are several other established and emerging women designers of color who are making a name for themselves in the fashion industry. Though they often fly under the high fashion radar, they are talented and deserving of recognition.
For Womens History Month, I want to acknowledge the black women designers who are diversifying the fashion landscape, one thread at a time. From Rihanna-favorite Stella Jean to the fast-growing designs of Suakoko Betty, clothing lines run by black women are poised to take the style industry by storm.
