Balmain Fall 2015.
Balmain’s seasonal shows are always heavily anticipated, high wattage events. Designer Olivier Rousteing has made the Parisian house into a buzzworthy brand, casting Rihanna, Kanye West, and Kim Kardashian in his ad campaigns, benefitting from their reach and good looks to bring his clothes to life. Not that he needs it. Each season churns out scintillating pieces, bursting with colors and movement.
Fall 2015 picked up where last season left off with plays on stripes, sheer, and bold, bright hues. Though we thought colorblocking exited stage left a few years ago, Balmain has brought it back, offsetting oranges with purples, navies, yellows, and greens, adding texture with lace and billowing pleated fabric.
The fun continued with party frocks. Think dangerously short accordion pleated ruffled cocktails, spangly fringed dresses, and bondage like sheer tops. The Balmain woman demands to be seen. She’ll have it no other way.
Prints comprised a rainbow of colors, and appeared on everything from maxi dresses to strong shouldered velveteen jackets with furry sleeves.
For the more subdued, Rousteing offered black and gold stripes with golden glitter sparkling under the light.
Of course I love it. What’s not to love? Though part of me feels this collection lacks the sophistication of years past. Perhaps it’s all the bright colors, sequins, and sheer panels that feels gaudy and overdone–perhaps it’s a little too in your face? It seems Parisian effortlessness has been replaced with Hollywood theatrics.
What do you think?
