Trends: NYFW Spring 2016 Part 1

On September 11th 2015 the fashion elite took their seats upon a deconstructed towering rooftop runway. The sun was setting, monks were chanting, navy clouds were strewn upon a cornflower blue sky providing a mystical backdrop to the 360-degree views of the Freedom Tower. This would be the Givenchy Spring/ Summer 2016 runway show. Honoring its austere date, the show was designed by performance artist Marina Abramovic, whose sensibility curated a moving tribute to the city—a testament to the healing power of a unified creative front and its infinite capacity to reinvent itself. The Givenchy show seems to have stuck a chord in the fashion universe that night, setting the tone for an awe-inspiring fashion week.  The NYC runways have been flowing with fiercely fresh collections, as our beloved designers raise the bar on themselves and reimagine the possibilities. These are the trends that have robbed our hearts.

 Silhouette Grandeur
The bigger the better seems to hold true this week as dramatic oversized silhouettes overwhelmed the runway—in a great way. Delpozo brought more flare to an even broader Palazzo pant (or giant skort) and paired them with oversized statement clutches and large platform sandals. Giant sweeping hats worked their way through Zangtoi’s collection, and Rosie Assoulin also brimmed with larger-than-life shapes, featuring multi-tiered skirts, off-the-shoulder blouses, and giant sundresses. Givenchy’s salute to the silhouette grandeur made its way into a series of breathtaking ball gowns.

Intense Prints
NYFW is raising the bar (or the stripe) on the potential of prints. Strong statement prints ruled the runway delivering deeply dimensional eye-catching patterns. We caught the official rebirth of gingham in Victoria Beckham’s dresses and in a similarly striking Dianne von Furstenberg gingham coordinate, with a matching tote and sandals too. Monique Lhuillier intensified the traditional feminine print with abstract neon floral frocks. Zac Posen reframed psychedelic retro patterns in a series of funky fresh coordinates, while Herve Lager bent our mind further with his bold geometric two-piece suits.

 Dynamic Details
High-concept detailing sprinkled its way through shoes, skirts, bags, and blouses suggesting that Spring 2016’s strength lies in its finishing touches. Altazzura and Zimmerman wowed with an explosion of strap-happy sandal heels, as fledgling designer Mary Katranzou debuted truly fashion-forward studding with mirrored-geometric discs.

Ethereal Florals
We’ve already had our way with floral this past season, but it seems that spring is just awakening to the depth of its floral frenzy: It’s about to find true texture. Rodarte brought dimension to the floral print with texturized mesh blossoms. Pastel and bold colored netting mixed with embroidered flowers weaved through Delpozo’s collection, while Tadashi Shoji transported us into an ethereal lavender wonderland.

Fringe, Feathers, and Frills
Givenchy found us fawning over fringe and feathers and recommitting ourselves to the fetish of all things fantastical. The romantically gothic collection inspired floor-length feathered gowns, as well as an assortment of sheer slip-like dresses trickling with black, white, and neutral-toned feathers. Rodarte followed suit and stunned in sea siren-esque collection reminiscent of mermaids flocked in feathers. It’s bound to be a magical spring!
