Do It Yourself By Majorie Harvey

A phenomenon called “DIY” has swept TV programs, blogs, YouTube channels, and social media platforms everywhere. All types of people are discovering that a number of expensive items can now be acquired affordably, with the simple cost of supplies and a healthy dose of sweat equity.
Everything from Dolce & Gabbana-inspired fur headphones to gold leaf furniture and faux finished flooring can be recreated for a reduced dollar amount. However, don’t be mistaken, what you save in coins you expend in effort. Trust me, I know all too well! But the beauty in choosing to do it yourself is that you have the added treasures of growth as the result of learning a new skill, creating a lasting memory, and the personal satisfaction of enjoying the fruits of your labor.

These same priceless benefits can be enjoyed by engaging in some form of civic virtue. We each have opinions on what’s wrong with our communities and world at large. During election season especially, everyone has their own commentary about what needs to be done to improve our society, and these conversations can get very heated! In the spirit of our pop cultural phenomenon, I challenge each of us, myself included, to be the change we want to see in the world. Turn words into actions.
Never underestimate the power you have to make a difference. Cash in on your inner compassion and devise a plan. Once you feel ready, roll up your sleeves and dare to DIY! The reward will be priceless.
