Though a litany of looks cascaded down the carpet for last night’s 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, only a select few stood out to me.
While most stars looked lovely, many missed the mark due to too little fabric, poor accessory pairings, and redundancy (i.e. haven’t we seen this before?).
Here are five looks that made it to the top of my chic list, in no particular order:

According to 9to5 Mac, the front-facing camera is going to get a huge upgrade on the new phones. The best feature? There's finally going to be a flash! Never again are you going to have to settle for a dark, grainy selfie just because you don't happen to be standing in front of professional photography lights. Think of the opportunities—selfies at concerts! Selfies at museums! Selfies during a blackout!
Oh and don't worry, it's not going to be a retina-damaging blinding light; instead, the front of your screen will emit a glow to lighten you up. Technology!

Spike Lee Will Receive An Honorary Oscar

Spike Lee will receive an honorary Oscar, reports USA Today. The award will be presented at the academy’s 7th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 14.
The honorary Oscar statuettes are given as a way to honor extraordinary lifetime achievement and exemplary contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service.
“The board is proud to recognize our honorees’ remarkable contributions,” said academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs in a statement on Thursday. “We’ll be celebrating their achievements with the knowledge that the work they have accomplished – with passion, dedication and a desire to make a positive difference – will also enrich future generations.”
Lee’s Do the Right Thing, earned him a 1989 Oscar nomination for original screenplay, and several film pundits consider his lack of directing nomination for the film a major snub. Um…Malcolm X, anyone?  When the Levees Broke?

Her joy is palpable. It brings me to my feet, and I grin right back at her, as if I’ve won something, too. Perhaps I have.
There is a belief among some African-Americans that to defeat racism, they have to work harder, be smarter, be better. Only after they give 150 percent will white Americans recognize black excellence for what it is. But of course, once recognized, black excellence is then supposed to perform with good manners and forgiveness in the face of any racist slights or attacks. Black excellence is not supposed to be emotional as it pulls itself together to win after questionable calls. And in winning, it’s not supposed to swagger, to leap and pump its fist, to state boldly, in the words of Kanye West, ‘‘That’s what it is, black excellence, baby.’’
