‘Straight Outta Compton’ Still On Top Second Week at No. 1

Straight Outta Compton

Straight Outta Compton continues to top the chart. The N.W.A biopic is No. 1 at the box office for the second week in a row.
According to studio estimates, the F. Gary Gray-directed film pulled in $26.8 million and crossed the $100 million mark for a total of $111.5 million.
Not even Tom Cruise could compete with Compton. His latest film, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, came in second with $11.7 million in its fourth week.

Compton, co-produced by Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, nearly doubled its $29 million budget in its opening weekend. It has shattered records, becoming the biggest August opening ever for an R-rated film and the best opening ever for a music biopic.
The film’s success can be attributed to positive word-of-mouth, combined with critical and social-media acclaim.
But it has also been criticized by some for overlooking N.W.A’s misogynistic lyrics and Dr. Dre’s abuse of women.
On Friday, Dre issued an apology. “I apologize to the women I’ve hurt,” the producer said in a statement. “I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.”
