For Black History Month, Essence Magazine wanted to do something special. They chose to take the hashtag popularized in 2015, #BlackGirlMagic, and devote an issue to the women who exemplify the hashtag with their achievements. Essence created three covers staring activist Johnetta “Netta” Elzie, Chi-raq star Teyonah Paris, and black-ish’s Yara Shahidi as representatives of the #BlackGirlMagic Class of 2016.
The #BlackGirlMagic Class of 2016 also features activists like Bree Newsome and Jessica Byrd in a feature called “On the Radar”. In addition, rising stars like Zendaya and Aja Naomi King, athletes, technology stars, fashion and beauty experts are also highlighted in this issue of Essence. Head to newsstands to pick up this issue of Essence and be inspired by the all the #BlackGirlMagic in its pages!
