Beyoncé 101: Rutgers University Offers A "Feminist" Class on the Grammy-Winning Singer.
Sick of the Beyoncé headlines yet? No? Neither am I, which is good because the news just keeps on coming. What’s the latest buzz on Queen B? Rutgers University has modeled a class after her. The course, developed by doctoral student and lecturer in the school’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies Kevin Allred, is called “Politicizing Beyoncé.”
Before you’re quick to think the course rehashes the superstar’s relationship with President Obama, think again. It goes a little bit deeper than how many performances and fundraisers Bey and her husband have hosted or attended on behalf of the First Family. In this course, her career is used as a “lens” with which to view race, gender and sexual politics in America.
The class, which is called "Feminist Perspectives: Politicizing Beyoncé," is being offered during the Spring semester at the college.
Queen Bey 101 is taught by PhD candidate Kevin Allred, who explained to the Rutgers Today newspaper exactly what students can expect from the class.
A snippet of course topics include: “the extent of Beyoncé’s control over her own aesthetic, whether her often half-naked body is empowered or stereotypical and her more racy performances as her alter ego, ‘Sasha Fierce’.”
Would you take this course?
