Morgan Hawthorne’s Vegan BBQ Pork Sliders
Vegan has never looked tastier! Our very own Morgan Hawthorne just pulled together the most mouthwatering BBQ pulled pork sandwich recipe–and it doesn’t have one bit of meat in it.
If you’re flirting with newfound vegan-hood (or simply want to offer your guests a barbecued vegetarian entree) and wondering how you’re going to survive Labor Day’s BBQ temptations, fear not! This vegan pulled pork slider is not only going to quiet the BBQ craving, but it’ll have you comin’ back for MO’!
Sources got the inside scoop from Morgan herself; here’s how she suggest you get cookin’:
1. Jackfruit. The one I used was vacuum sealed, but you can also find it packed in water. If so, just drain and pat dry.
2. Season with BBQ seasoning, onion, garlic powder, and salt. Sauté in olive oil.
3. Break apart the fruit with forks to shred. To 7 oz of jack fruit, I added about 1/4 cup of my fave BBQ sauce and a drizzle of honey.
4. Let the fruit simmer and even let a few pieces get a crispy “bark” on it, just like with real pulled pork. Once all the sauce has been absorbed (approx. 7 min) you can turn off heat.
5 .Toast slider buns.
6. For slaw, I used a shredded slaw mix and added vegan mayo, a squirt of mustard, onion powder, a dash of salt, tbsp relish, and a tbsp of vinegar.
7. Assemble and serve immediately.
