Christopher Kane Fall 2014.

Christopher Kane Fall 2014 14
The fashion gods must be keen on making the garbage bag happen. Last season, editors and buyers were starry-eyed over Lanvin‘s metallic carryall mimicking the shape of the kitchen mainstay. This season, Christopher Kane tries his hand at trash bag realness, and unfortunately, comes up short. The problem with shiny black nylon is that if you don’t work it properly, it’s simply going to look like, well, garbage. Kane offers tops, jackets, sweatshirts, and dresses made of the stuff, and unfortunately, the material did not look as expensive as one would hope for a luxury label. Sure, a hooded dress with a cropped puffer vest looks cool, but when you add a ruched bubble hem and cuffs made of black nylon, it can read a little more “sanitation department” than “cool it-girl.” Not even artful laser-cut patterns could save those nylon looks. Added fur panels didn’t help much either.

Kane also served up a crop of frilly knits, creating a high fashion Little Miss Muffet mood.

The more appealing looks were definitely the ones with fluttering swaths of organza piled high to create a geometric ruffle effect. You can see the panels trembling, even in still photos. Definitely a welcome departure from the rest of the collection. Also of note were the wave-effect sleeves Kane added to three looks, giving off an air of romantic futurism.

I wouldn’t say this was Kane’s best collection ever. There were some cool moments here and there, but many looks didn’t seem as refined or expensive as they could have. Again, I blame the shiny nylon fabric. But for what it’s worth, I wager Kerry Washington would look ravishing in that pink wave-sleeved dress.
