Was Lupita Nyong'o Skin Lightened For Her Vanity Fair Shoot?
Lupita Nyong’o fanboys and girls were excited to hear the beloved awards season it-girl was going to grace the pages of Vanity Fair‘s February issue. But their joy quickly faded when the magazine posted an image from the spread in which Nyong’o's skin looks much lighter than usual. Angry Lupettes took to Twitter to call out the mag for the misstep–one that seems to happen far too often with black and brown actresses. I wager Vanity Fair might blame the lighting for Nyong’o's fairer appearance, which I can buy–we all sometimes appear lighter if there’s enough exposure. But part of what makes Lupita so stunning is her beautiful, deep tone. It’s what makes her outfits pop. I would think the mag might want to showcase this unique beauty. There’s no way to know for sure if the lightening was intentional, but the pictures could have been better had Vanity Fair taken a cue from Dazed and Confused. What do you think? Is Lupita’s complexion the result of bright lighting? Or is something more shady afoot? (The Gloss)
