#TBT: The Style Evolution of Monica

She sang her way into our hearts during the early nineties with a smooth R&B sound and has been killing the charts ever since.  Singer, Monica, has always had the chops to make it in the music industry, and after more than twenty years in, her style has kept up.
An aficionado of all things trendy, she has mastered rocking trend pieces without a look becoming too gimmicky, even with hair colors that seem to change (and work) with every outfit.

When Monica first came onto the music scene, her style was incredibly 90’s.  From athletic streetwear in bold colors to embroidered jeans and tops with mesh insets, much of what she wore then is what girls seem to run to stores to buy now.  A trendsetter ahead of her time?  I think so.

As the years went by, Monica experimented with different textures and patterns.  Spikes and studs on leather jackets, thigh high snakeskin boots, and color-blocked pieces spoke to how much Monica kept up with trends at the time, and nailed it.

Oh, and red carpets?  Monica’s got that handled.  From jacquard gowns glittered in gold, to sleek, sculptured, and black, to luxurious in lace, she’s not afraid to experiment with different styles and silhouettes.

The slay hasn’t stopped since it started with Monica.  A fan of Balmain for something sexy yet sophisticated and Alexander McQueen for a daring, yet elegant look, her wardrobe must look like a luxury department boutique.

Even her casual style hits the mark.  Giuseppe Zanotti sneakers, jeans, printed separates, and a sturdy designer purse usually complete her laid back looks.

She’s currently on tour with Xscape, singing her hits and delivering looks and amazing hair.  Over twenty years in the business and just like her voice, her style has stood the test of time.  And thanks to Ade Samuel at the helm of her wardrobe’s direction, she’s definitely going to appear on a few best dressed lists.
Here’s to a woman who has remained an inspiration to many, not only through her faith, her music, and her evident love for her family, but also through her style.

What do you think of this week’s pick?
