J.Crew continues to lead the pack of contemporary brands when it comes to accessibility, profits, and reception for the modern-day woman. Jenna Lyons and Head of Women’s Design Tom Mora continue to play to the whims and desires of sartorially savvy ladies and the brand’s presentation for Fall 2014 did not disappoint with loads of gusto, moody hues, and a slew of textures.

Mora pulled inspiration from the 20′s and 30′s Weimar Republic in Berlin, which translated to the collection’s deep color palette and its array of menswear-inspired silhouettes. Masculine jackets were thrown over the models’ shoulders and boyfriend cardigans were uplifted with classic stripes, all anchored by the brand’s second collaboration with “It” shoe designer Sophia Webster.
It wouldn’t be a J.Crew offering without denim and the classic textile was given a modern spin on a long asymmetric zip jacket and a head-to-toe jean look. It felt particularly modern when accompanied by luxe sweatpant styles, a bow-tie, pointed-toe pumps, and a silky floral blouse.
Texture play was undeniable with fuzzy knits, cozy scarves, plush velvet sweats (adding these to my must-have list for the season), and pony hair-detailed toppers.
Prints were plentiful with intricately-detailed florals playing centerstage on bermuda shorts and functional cropped trousers, while stripes and dots covered an everyday essential tee and scarf.
I’m all about simplicity, thus a blush collarless coat and a burgundy leather laser-cut crop top and high-waist pleated trousers were among my favorite looks. The coat will go down in a modern day woman’s wardrobe as a Winter necessity, while the top and trousers can be worn year-round, together or separately.
We’ve seen First Lady Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, and Solange Knowles opt for J.Crew designs in the past and they will certainly be pleased with some of the fancier dress selections here. A floral jacquard dress with a pleated skirt was practically made for our FLOTUS while a superbly simple, retro-inspired blush pink number will work immediately for Hollywood’s maternity set (hint hint Kerry Washington).
