It's not a lipstick and it's not a gloss. So what exactly are velvet lips?
You may have noticed that celebs like Kylie Jenner and Shay Mitchell are rocking some seriously enviable liquid lipstick shades lately and many are referring to the trend as velvet or suede. Velvet simply describes the finish of the gloss-lipstick hybrid. "The velvety-smooth texture looks luxe and fuzzy, almost like you can't help but touch it," described celeb makeup artist Suzie Kim. The catch to trying the trend is that the matte-but-opaque product starts off with a water-like consistency before it quickly dries after hitting the lip.
Due to the product's quick tube-to-lip dry time, there's a little more method to it than simply swiping the product on like you would a regular gloss. To get your hands on the luxe fall lip trend, Suzie shares her celeb-tested tips on how to perfectly apply a velvet pout.

Prep Lips the Night Before: "This
quick-dry matte lip is great for long-term wear, but the product is
extremely drying," said Suzie. If you know that you are going to be
sporting a velvet lip the next day, Suzie advised to give your lips a
surge of moisture by layering on a thick lip balm while you sleep.Set Lips With a Powder: When it comes to putting your makeup on the next morning, treat your lips the same as the rest of your face. "It's important to make sure that lips are moisture-free, so I will always set them with a powder just as you do with your foundation," recommended the pro.
Start in the Middle and Work Your Way Out: "With a quick-dry formula like this it's easier to add than it is to take away," warned Suzie. To apply, take the doe-foot wand and start at the center of the lips, building out towards the edges. As you start to get to the edges of lips, be sure that you are applying the product with a taut lip to get a crisp line along your lip line.

You Can Cheat Your Shape: "For a plumper
look, go slightly out of bounds of your natural lip line, sticking only
to the middle area," recommended Suzie. Focusing only on the middle
sections, use the doe-foot wand to make a thicker outline right along
your natural lip line. "This will give you the illusion of a fuller
pout," said the pro. Just make sure that you aren't boldly outlining the
outer corners, otherwise you're veering into clown makeup territory.Touch-ups Are Quick and Easy: The good news is that unlike traditional lipstick, the dark liquid lipstick colors actually stay on longer. "Although you will need to do slight touch-ups throughout the day, you won't need to redo your entire lip if you've done all the prep work right the first time," assured Suzie. Especially if you've been eating or drinking, the middle section only is where you will need to dab on fresh color.
Prevent Feathering: "If your lips start to bleed or feather throughout the day, just take a q-tip and smooth out the line, removing any out-of-bounds color," advised the makeup artist. Next just set the color with a concealer and a pointed lip liner brush to reline the lips and define the shape. "You can do this concealer trick the first time, or you can just save it for quick saves later in the day," mentioned the pro.
