Givenchy Pre-Fall 2014.

Riccardo Tisci is truly a master of the mix: never failing to blend different influences and Givenchy signatures (sometimes incongruous) into a scintillating swirl of newness. His latest Pre-Fall 2014 for the French fashion house builds on the African imprint that pervaded though the Spring 2014 offerings, infused with Gustav Klimt-inspired prints and Bauhaus-esque colorblocked hues.

Colorblocking packs a punch right out of the gate, giving rise to draped blouses, an electric feather jacket, neutral trousers that can work for the office, and so much more.

Tisci riffs on the draped frocks and separates inspired by traditional Maasai garb, this time infusing the designs with exposed zippers. The pieces are anchored with velvet bags and sandals for a true texture synthesis.

Fur is far from timid, accenting the cuffs of an elbow-sleeve coat, the bodice and sleeves of a leather jacket, and a vest that is cinched ever so glamorously at the waist with a shimmering gold band.

Tisci loves a button-front polo: the style was extremely popular in 2013 for stylish men, with the brand’s hard-to-miss star motifs around the neckline. He reimagines the classic for the ladies in the offerings with a colorful American flag motif and an earth-hued colorblock print, both paired with floor-length black pleated maxi skirts, black leather belts pulling in the models’ waists, and black leather opera gloves. The juxtaposition of masculine versus feminine, preppy versus bohemian, and the fusion of different textures is strong and a very real way to layer up in real-time given the polar vortex sweeping through.

Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Nicole Richie are among the slew of stylish women who wore Givenchy in 2013 and they will surely be dazzled by the sequin numbers here. With awards season on the horizon, I won’t be surprised if a couple of these numbers make their debut on the red carpet with shorter hemlines, fierce makeup, and sky-high pumps.
