Loza Maléombho’s
Fall 2015 collection, titled Alien nation, explores the link between
natural and supernatural, male and female, traditional and modern.
Literal knots hold pants and skirt together, balancing high and low with
a series of extraterrestrial ties.
Hand woven kente, natural burlap, wax cotton, and silk/organza
coalesce to create innovative silhouettes that push the limits of
conformity.
Raffia fringe trim is a nod to Zaouli dancers from the North of Cote D’Ivoire.
Hand woven cloths paired with sheer white blouses are nods to Baoule wedding traditions.
Artsy? Yes. Whether this collection is wearable remains to be seen. It
will take a bold fashionista like Erykah Badu or Solange Knowles to show
us how it’s done for every day.
