Alexander Wang’s roots are grounded in the street and athletic-inspired gear and though he often innovates and figures out technologically-advanced ways to move his brand’s aesthetic forward as well as the conversation surrounding it, he’s always doing his best work when he stays grounded to what propelled his line forward in the first place. His latest collection for Resort featured the kind of pieces that were fundamental enough to work for both his legion of fans and women who had never worn his brand before: not very cheerful in palette, but oozing power and functionality.
It was all about wardrobe necessities with that signature Alexander Wang quirk. Classic bermuda shorts and LBDs were given edge with grommets, while otherwise everyday skinnies were accented with leather and buckles.
Though Resort is normally full of bold hues and eye-catching prints, Wang kept the offerings fairly demure in palette with only neutrals at play. A black calf-grazing leather skirt, flatform sandals in the same texture, cutoffs, flared denim, and a belted trench spoke more to year-round dressing than the actual season at hand.
Pleats were one of the collection’s standout details on a black knee-length leather skirt, a white iteration paired with a chunky knit, a short-sleeve LWD that gave all new meaning to “rolling out of bed”, and a short-sleeve black leather top that could be worn no matter what the season with everything from your favorite denim flares to a glam embellished pencil skirt, as Wang paired it.
We’ve seen Taraji P. Henson, Miley Cyrus, Zoe Kravitz, and Julianne Moore all wear Wang on the red carpet this year and they might be intrigued by the smattering of cocktail-ready attire including an embellished dress with a deep v-neckline and a black long-sleeve silk gown with side slits and ties.
