While I was aching to see loads of Chinese inspiration, many women focused more on the ‘Through the Looking Glass’ subtitle, wearing sheer dresses, some decorated with light reflecting, mirrored fragments.
I plucked out a few favorites of the night.
Behold, My top 10, in no particular order:
1. Fan BingBing in Chistopher Bu
Chinese actress Fan BingBing glistened in a gold sequined dress and cape, designed by Bu Kewen of Christopher Bu.
The cape was said to be inspired by the Chinese ancient imperial palace – the Forbidden City. The color of the cape was a nod to paintings from the Duogong; the embroidery itself reflective of the classic official architectural style of the Qing Dynasty.
In short, Fan Bing Bing adhered to and represented the theme like no other, incorporating both Chinese history and sequins that sparkled like shards of glass under the flashing lights.
What more could you ask for in terms of glamour?
2. Rihanna in Guo Pei 2010 Couture
Few brought quite as much drama as Rihanna, who made her presence known in a voluminous, fur lined, yellow coat from Guo Pei’s 2010 Couture collection.
The endlessly inventive internet memes placed pepperoni on her train to mimic a pizza; more than a few likened her look to a bathrobe.
Despite detractors, Rihanna’s look was spot on, unexpected, and brought the incomparable flair for which the event is known. And her makeup?
Flawless.
3. Sarah Jessica Parker in custom H&M and Philip Treacy
Another one known to bring unmatched drama? Sarah Jessica Parker, who uplifted a custom H&M dress with a Philip Treacy hat.
Her headpiece truly took her look from bla to bomb. Equipped with fur pom poms, long red tassels, and fiery details, it was both artful and Asian inspired.
Isn’t that what the night was all about?
4. Karolina Kurkova in Tommy Hilfiger
Another one who beamed in the theme was Karolina Kurkova, who showed off her stems in a silken number by Tommy Hilfiger.
A mandarin collar and dragon design on the long sleeves were spot on. Giuseppe Zanotti sandals completed her look.
Though her look was more cocktail party than couture laden ball, she definitely nailed it, and looked great doing so.
5. Zendaya in Fausto Puglisi
We knew Lady Zendaya was going to show out, and she didn’t disappoint in a sun printed stunner by Fausto Puglisi.
The black and red tones spoke to Chinese culture’s most auspicious colors (red for good luck), and her bejeweled crown and cuffs added kick.
Aside from theme, she simply looked elegant, classy, and appropriate for the occasion, which can’t be said for some starlets twice her age.
Slay on, Z!
6. Lady Gaga in Balenciaga
Lady Gaga was one of Alexander Wang’s angels, and looked like a queen in a black crepe jumpsuit and rose velvet net evening coat hand-embroidered with black rhinestones and 14,000 feathers from Balenciaga.
Her coat was said to be inspired by the Chinese Opera. Dark eyebrows and a crown added to her regal allure.
The look was artsy, unexpected, and pretty much perfect for the occasion.
7. Zoe Kravitz in Alexander Wang
Though another Wang angel, Zoe Kravitz went with the ‘Through the Looking Glass’ penchant in a custom mesh, Alexander Wang dress.
A wide belt cinched her waist.
Gorgeous hair, makeup, and a septum ring brought a rocker chic vibe to her Gala look.
I loved it!
8. Joan Smalls in Roberto Cavalli
Peter Dundas dressed quite a few starlets at his new post at Roberto Cavalli, including model Joan Smalls, who went for sheer in a purple silk cady and black tulle gown embellished gown in a flower motif.
A purple crocodile belt and black choker accessorized her simply stunning look.
9. Anne Hathaway in Ralph Lauren
Anne Hathaway looked like a golden goddess in a hooded creation by Ralph Lauren.
Her design of her simple sheath was reminiscent of a Chinese Cheongsam dress.
Her gilded hood added just the perfect dose of whimsical mystery and fun.
10. Naomi Campbell in Custom Burberry
Naomi Campbell looked luxurious for the night in a light green floor-length tulle Burberry gown with hand-embroidered sequins and black feather trim.
Her blunt bangs and eye makeup were nods to the night’s motif. The sheer panels were apropos.
And in short, Naomi looked gorgeous and graceful. She does was Queen Mothers do: SLAY!
Those are my top picks for the Costume Institute Gala.
Who, in your opinion, had the best look of the night?
Who was the Belle of the 2015 Met Ball?
