Best of 2014: Fashionista of the Year.
Fashionista of the Year is undoubtedly always my most talked about feature!
This year, a slew of stylish celebs sauntered down the red carpet in mixed prints, showstopping gowns, cute and casual looks, and figure-hugging frocks. From my favorite Houston-born fashion maven to last year’s Academy Awards Best Supporting Actress, let’s see who is nominated for 2014.
1. Solange Knowles
Solange just keeps getting better! With each season, she latches onto emerging designers — flexing her fashion prowess and influencing the industry yet again.
This year, Solange hit the stage of Coachella and a slew of other music festivals, collaborated with Puma, expanded her Saint Heron label, was announced as the face of Eleven Paris’s Spring 2015 collection, and covered a few high-fashion glossies.
Whether in a bug-print getup from Azede Jean-Pierre or a printed suit, she never failed to stand out in a crowd with her larger than life afro and mile-long stems.
Solange’s nuptials to Alan Ferguson veritably broke the internet and inspired women all over the world to throw an affair mimicking the beautiful NOLA ceremony.
Her bold looks in Cosmopolitan’s March 2014 issue and her bold, yellow Christian Siriano ensemble at the IWC Art Basel Event are among our favorites.
We know for a fact that Solange is going to shut 2015 down!
2. Nicole Richie
Last year’s Fashionista of the Year winner was back again defending her title with sophisticated looks that wowed women, designers, and critics the world over.
From a showstopping Vera Wang Spring 2015 confection to simple black and white looks while out and about with her husband, Nicole is committed to being one of fashion’s chameleons and we’re happy to go along for the ride. She’s worn red carpet-ready gowns, combat boots, and everything in between.
She made quite a splash by debuting lavender hair which quickly became a blue shade.
No matter what Nicole slips on, her confidence shines through and we all know that makes all the difference.
She’s an undeniable beauty and her hit VH1 TV show Candidly Nicole shows that fashion is best when you don’t take yourself too seriously.
From ELLE to Paper, Nicole also made her mark in high-fashion editorial spreads.
She always looks as if she’s truly having a great time with her style and any fashionista should have that same sense of effortlessness, don’t you think?
Nicole is a risk taker and we wouldn’t be surprised if 2015 led her to a new haircut or an entirely new hair color altogether.
3. Rihanna
This year, Rihanna stepped out almost everyday! And if the paparazzi weren’t snapping pics of her, then she was posting pics of herself on Instagram and Twitter.
From sultry Alexandre Vauthier numbers to impossible to miss furs and vintage, Rih hops from breathtaking gowns to Timbs with little to no effort.
Ms. Fenty’s swag is through the roof and it makes it nearly impossible for her to ever look anything less than stellar. She also has a whole host of designer friends, as well as a slew of major brands looking to dress her at every turn.
Her flawless face is the perfect complement to even the most pared-down ensemble and her fun-loving spirit makes it a joy to see her everywhere from the red carpet to spending quality time with her family.
Collaborations were aplenty for Rih as she launched her latest MAC Viva Glam collection, as well as becoming the Creative Director of Puma.
And you know the magazine covers just kept coming in from ELLE to Vogue.
Rihanna never fails to surprise us, so we will be waiting with bated breath at what moves she makes and what she chooses to wear while making them in 2015.
4. Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian continued to take the world by storm in 2014, while doing a little Internet-breaking in the process.
It’s a rare day when Kim Kardashian, her famous husband, equally famous daughter, or stylish sisters aren’t spotted somewhere by the cameras. Her headturning curves, reality TV show, and coveted app keep all eyes on her at virtually all times.
From Saint Laurent to midriff-baring crop tops from a whole host of designers, Kim preferred to skew sultry. Whether or not you all thought her ‘fits were hot! or hmm, you definitely weighed in and gave your opinion.
Mrs. Kardashian-West isn’t new to fame, but the fashion world definitely started taking her more seriously this year. She didn’t miss a beat in the style department and was spotted front row at a slew of international fashion shows, as well as becoming the face of Balmain’s Spring 2015 campaign along with husband Kanye West.
Though we weren’t on board with every one of Kim’s style choices this year, she got in her groove and it was actually exciting to see which designer she might choose for her next red carpet appearance — though you could expect her look to be on the sexier side. With Kanye giving his input behind the scenes and adorable daughter North becoming a style maven in her own right, we’d say that she had quite the blessed year no?
And who could forget her wedding? Talk about an extravaganza!
The sky’s the limit and with almost 23 million Instagram followers and 27 million on Twitter, we can expect that Kim will exert her influence over the masses whether in denim or a pencil skirt.
5. Jennifer Lopez
What can’t J.Lo do? We all know she’ll always be Jenny from the Block, but her empire and influence continues to grow bigger and bigger with each year. She’s dominating the world at this point.
Whether she’s in sultry cutout numbers or bold gowns from one of her favorite designers, Zuhair Murad, she always steps out looking absolutely flawless.
Her stint on American Idol gave us looks to drool over almost daily.
She also covered numerous high-fashion glossies and showed off her enviable curves, whispering “get like me” with each pose.
Her new film, The Boy Next Door hits theaters in January, which means a slew of movie premieres, photocalls, and parties all over the globe. We can’t wait!
6. Lupita Nyong’o
To say that 2014 was Lupita Nyongo’s year was an understatement. It’s hard to believe that she only burst onto the fashion scene in 2013 because it all looked so effortless for her this year.
The Academy Award-winning actress slayed us with high-fashion look after high-fashion look, sauntering down the red carpet in bold prints, eye-catching hues, loads of texture, every length in the book, and beauty and hair choices that had the world abuzz.
Naturally, magazines had to get on board, thus Lupita covered Glamour, Marie Claire UK, Elle France, Vogue, and was named People Magazine’s 2014 Most Beautiful Person.
She became one of the faces of Lancôme and Miu Miu Eyewear and rightfully so!
With Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens in post-production and current filming of The Jungle Book going down, we can expect to see a lot more of Ms. Nyong’o next year.
7. Ciara
Ciara continued to evolve this year, becoming a mom to adorable son Future and stunning in showstopping fashions with ease and grace.
Whether in sheer numbers by Givenchy (she’s one of Riccardo Tisci’s muses) to supremely feminine Vionnet looks, CiCi never disappoints.
From Instagram to the red carpet, she rocked this year and transitioned from maternity style back to her runway proclivities in what seemed like weeks.
Ciara posed in almost nothing for W Magazine with the likes of Pharrell and Tyra Banks
She knows what works best for her, which is honestly everything! With model height and legs for days, there’s veritably nothing this woman can’t pull off.
