For past few years the menswear sector has grown at a faster clip than it’s bigger sister and though it has yet to surpass womenswear, 2014 was no different. Of course, just as with womenswear, a few guys stood heads and tails above the rest, so with no further ado, i present to you the nominations for the Most Fashionable Man.
1. Chadwick Boseman
2014 has been a big year for actor/producer Chadwick Boseman. A gig playing James Brown in Get On Up and a cover of GQ put him squarely in the limelight. Luckily he came dressed for the occasion.
The hallmark of any GQ guy, Bosman knows how to wear a suit. A fan of the printed variety(windowpane with a notched lapel anyone?!), he made it clear pulling off the dapper look was as natural as jeans and a tee.
For those more lax moment, Calvin Klein jumpers were an option. The collection itself got so much play that Boseman’s co-sign was just one in a pretty lengthy list.
2. Kanye West
If the fashion industry isn’t going to let Kanye West enter as a designer, it seems they have no problem letting him be a style star. The eccentric rapper always steps out in some of the finest threads and 2014 was no exception.
Saint Laurent, Haider Ackermann, Balmain and more. The list honestly is never ending, of course including pieces from his A.P.C. collaboration.
2015 should be exciting as that’s when he’s likely to focus a bit more on his adidas collaboration but with a Balmain campaign to his name, 2014 was nothing to scoff at.
3. Idris Elba
Rumors are proliferating that this Brit is being considered to play Bond in the next series of 007 movies and with good reason! Have you seen him in a suit?!
With a penchant for darker tones and a sharp eye to tailoring, the actor showed everyone how to clean up this year.
And yes, we did indeed see what he said about what happens when he’s wearing a bowtie and a smile, so we’re just going to leave this right here.
4. Pharrell Williams
It’s no denial that Pharrell was a style force this year. With multiple design collaborations, chief amongst them a link up with adidas Original, hit songs on the radio and a stint on The Voice, he gave us ample opportunity to take stock of his style.
And an eclectic style it is! A strand or three of Chanel pearls on his neck was a constant as was some sort of cap — case in point, the infamous string of Vivienne Westwood toppers.
Even the Oscars weren’t immune to his quirky style. As one of the few who can really take an eclectic take on a tuxedo, the “Happy” star donned Lanvin long shorts! You might not have agreed with the choice but you have to admit that takes a bit of confidence and personal style.
5. David Gandy
After making his money being clothed(and de-robed) day in and day out as a model, David Gandy has come out as quite a style star. A Londoner and clear fan of Saville Row, the model cut an impressive figure all year long.
While it doesn’t take much “personal style” per se to wear a suit, mixing and matching separates requires quite a bit . And if the right separates look is a spade in the game of fashion, Gandy served them up with aplomb.
6. Common
For our last nomination, conscious rapper Common is up. With a pretty precise eye to color, the star kept it pretty cool and laid back this year.
The “Selma” actor’s look was just as put together on the outside that he clearly is intellectually.
There you have it!
Who gets your vote for best dressed male of 2014?
