Best of 2014: Outfit of the Year.
Happy Almost 2015!
I am finishing up my year end superlatives in the next two days, and couldn’t close out 2014 without taking a look at which outfits shook the sartorial world. From see though crystal embellished gowns to ravishing red caped beauts, quite a few ensembles caused us to turn our collective heads.
Let’s review!
1. Solange’s Kenzo Wedding Dress
Solange’s Humberto Leon for Kenzo dress were the things dreams were made of: simple, yet stunning. Elegance personified.
While others attempted to break the internet with nudity, Solange Knowles’s wedding photos broke the internet in another way. Style, serenity, and a series of gag worthy poses caused these images to be reblogged and reposted all over the world.
Reader Layla said it best when she wrote, “Fashion is fleeting, style eternal. Solange is IT! Love her. Love them…This, in my humble opinion, epitomizes all things fashionbomb! #breaksomething.”
2. Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren Spring 2014 Collection at the 2014 Golden Globes
Lupita Nyong’o was a fashionista’s delight this whole year, stunning in every color under the sun. She worked some amazing looks—from her powdery blue Prada gown at the Oscars to burnt orange Givenchy at the NAACP Image Awards–but none created as much of a wave as the caped red silk cady Ralph Lauren creation she donned at the Golden Globes.
The off the shoulder dress was an exploration of fit and form, with a silhouette enhancing bodice and a voluminous cape. Her subtle sparkling gold eye shadow, Fred Leighton jewels, and a gold clutch truly allowed the dress to shine. Drama. Poise. Punch. This look had it all.
3. Rihanna in Adam Selman at the CFDA Awards
When Rihanna accepted the fashion icon award at the 2014 CFDA awards, she came to make a splash! She did just that in a delectably sheer, crystal covered gown by frequent collaborator Adam Selman.
The dress was said to be a tribute to Josephine Baker, and in the spirit of the erstwhile siren, Rihanna slipped on a crystal headband and a strategically placed pink fur stole.
While undoubtedly controversial, few could deny Rihanna’s beauty, or how amazing her toned body looked in the dress. Whether you loved or loathed this ensemble, it was certainly one of the most memorable of 2014.
4. Beyonce in Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci at the 2014 Met Gala
“Of course some dumb sh*t goes down when there’s a billion dollars on the elevator.” Indeed. Beyonce’s Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci Met Gala dress was quite stunning on its own, but became iconic for the drama it was unwittingly involved in afterwards.
Elevator-gate could’ve been cause for Mrs. Carter’s dress to suffer some sort of wardrobe malfunction, but it was kept in pristine condition as Beyonce moved her hem out of the way as her family members went at it.
She emerged from the kerfuffle Flawless, as usual, her beaded headpiece, earrings, and accessories stunningly intact.
Slay Lady Bey, Slay.
And that does it! While there were tons of amazing looks this year, few were as iconic as the above.
So who gets your vote for Outfit of the Year?
