Ones to Watch: 6 Fashionistas to Look Out For in 2015.
I am most inspired by new designers and new fashionistas that explode onto the scene and there was a healthy helping of the latter this year. A few stylish ladies made their mark in the fashion world over the past twelve months and they will surely go on to do even bigger things in 2015. Not all of them are new to the red carpet, but they certainly made an unforgettable impression in 2014.
Here are some of my picks in no particular order:
1. Gugu Mbatha-Raw
British-born actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw got her start in the acting business almost a decade ago, but she just recently made a splash globally with the release of her internationally-acclaimed film Belle. She gained some high-fashion fans this year and flaunted her incredibly chic and graceful style sensibility on red carpets from New York to London.
She hit the Met Gala on the arm of iconic Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz, snagged a spread in ELLE’s Women in Hollywood issue, and jetsetted to some of the world’s biggest cities while promoting her film Beyond the Lights.
2015 will bring two new films for Gugu: Jupiter Ascending which is already gaining industry buzz and The Whole Truth. With these film premieres will come countless red carpet appearances, press conferences, photocalls, and cocktail parties that will give her the chance to sport some of her favorite designers including Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein. Gugu’s chic fashion sense will undoubtedly lead her to the cover of a high-fashion glossy and in the front row of a fashion show or two.
We can’t wait to see what she has in store!
2. Keke Palmer
Actress, songstress, and TV host Keke Palmer captivated us all this year as Broadway’s Cinderella, as well as being fashionably spotted at promotional appearances, stylish parties, and awards shows. She also acted in film A Trip To Bountiful and on hit television shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Masters of Sex, and her own program, Just Keke.
She sparkled and shined in brands including Cushnie et Ochs, Bec & Bridge, ICB, Sergio Rossi, and so much more.
With 2015 comes the end of Keke’s stint as Cinderella, but her newest film Brotherly Love will be released. With a new pixie and high-fashion spreads in Essence and Vanity Fair this year, we only expect more of the same from the extremely talented Ms. Palmer.
I’d love to see Keke really flex her style muscles and take some risks like the sultry ICB look she wore to The Imitation Game Premiere, as well as a few front row appearances during Fashion Weeks all around the globe.
3. Laura Govan
Laura Govan has come a long way from her tumultuous stint on Basketball Wives! The Bay Area-born beauty hit the red carpet a number of times this year, as well as making a splash on Instagram with her head-turning ensembles.
Her daring fashion sense and social media outfit posts gained her some real fans — over 150K Twitter followers and close to 500K on the ‘gram.
Laura wears it all and sported pieces from Michael Costello, Band of Outsiders, Balmain, and BCBGMAXAZRIA this year.
We’ll definitely see more of Laura in 2015 on Instagram and at New York Fashion Week at the very least. It would be no surprise if she was to churn out her own fashion line or even collaborate on a gown or two with one of her favorite designers, Michael Costello.
The possibilities are endless for Laura and we can’t wait to see which brands she wears and what risks she takes in the new year.
4. Mila J
Mila J exploded onto the scene this year, though she’s no stranger to fame as she’s been taught a little something about it from her sister, Jhene Aiko.
With the help of stylist Law Roach, she dazzled at awards shows, NYFW, and stylish parties in looks that screamed “I have arrived”.
She released an album and collaborated on tunes with Trey Songz and B.O.B., as well as gaining a pretty huge fan in icon Prince.
She’s taken a liking to emerging brands including Ricki Brazil and Harbison, though she wore mainstream designers as well from Moschino to Jean Paul Gaultier.
We definitely have our eyes on Mila and what ensembles she’ll be slipping on in 2015!
5. Tessa Thompson
Tessa Thompson was the girl on fire this year. The actress was all over our movie screens in films Dear White People and Selma, though she made quite the mark on the red carpet as well.
The beauty became quite the fashion darling in pieces from Proenza Schouler and Emanuel Ungaro.
She won the Breakthrough Actor award at the Gotham Independent Awards for her role in Dear White People, showing that she’s made serious waves in more than one industry.
Tessa’s latest films The Prop Is The Girl and Living Room Coffin will be released in the new year.
We hope she clings to high-fashion brands like Rodarte and others in 2015 and we know for sure that she’ll land a fashion spread in a stylish glossy. She’s also an absolute beauty, thus we’d be over the moon if she landed a campaign with a major beauty brand.
6. Zendaya Coleman
Zendaya Coleman was undoubtedly one of this year’s biggest risk takers and she grew up before our very eyes, transitioning from Disney to the mainstream with each new look.
The Grammys were on her agenda this year, as well as a number of editorial features.
She was nominated for an NAACP Image Award, Radio Disney Music Awards, World Music Awards, and a BET Award. Not bad for an eighteen year-old huh?
She’s currently filming TV series K.C. Undercover which is to be released in 2015. We know that the new year will also bring with it more fashion covers, more fashion week sightings, and numerous opportunities to slay on the red carpet.
And there you have it! Our choices for style stars to look out for in 2014. Who is on your radar for next year?
