A few weeks ago, purple haired reader wrote in, “I recently decided to dye my hair a vibrant violet purple with an ombre effect. I’m emailing in hopes that you can help me figure out my fall/winter wardrobe. I don’t want to rely on black in order to pull off my new hair. Please help me construct a new wardrobe to embrace and complement my purple hair.”And while I offered my best advice, referencing the color wheel and showcasing pictures of celebs with violet locks, I thought it would be interesting to get some tips from blue haired stylist, Olori Swank!
Purple and blue aren’t far from each other on the color wheel, and either way, I felt she might have some great general tips on Fall style for fashionistas with vibrant hued hair.
Read on for her tips!
She says, “As a girl who has been wearing blue hair for almost a decade I definitely have my fair share of experience when it comes to dressing to compliment my hair. Although I tend to go for blacks, black/white, and neutrals, I’m not scared to go for bold colors and fun prints. ”
“All in all, here’s how I’ve learned over the years to dress for my hair:
One way make to make colorful hues work is to use a monochromatic scheme to your advantage. For example, I’ve taken a color analogous to blue and used it to craft majority of my outfit. “
“…or you can take an opposite color on the color wheel and do the same thing.”
“When playing with prints, I like to either choose prints in a complimentary color or a related color. Here, I’ve chosen a complimentary color in red-based paisley print. ”
“Here, I’ve chosen to go the analogous route with a plaid composed of blue and violet hues.”
“Another thing I’ve found that works for me is wearing various hues of the colors in my hair. Here, I’m pulling blues from my denim and grays from the gray tee. I balanced it out by adding a black jacket to the look.”
“And of course you can never go wrong with blacks, whites, and neutrals :) ”
That does it!
So the long and short of it is: do, indeed, use the color wheel to your advantage !
