Lena Horne.

Lena Horne is one of the most captivating women I’ve ever written about. Through her infectious smile and a burning desire to break free of Hollywood stereotypes, she certainly solidified her place within history as a trailblazing pioneer who seized life by the reins while creating her own destiny. In addition to her life-changing story, Horne’s impeccable style has also assisted in shaping the trends of today.

Miss Lena Horne was born June 30, 1917 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn and, as the product of a divided family, was primarily raised by her grandparents. Interestingly enough, (as a fun fact) both sides of Lena’s family possessed a mix of European American, Native American and African American. As a child, the young talent traveled vigorously with her mother (who worked as an actress) while obtaining a glimpse into what the world of entertainment truly encompassed. In 1933, Horne joined the chorus line of the Cotton Club in New York City and, from there, her prosperous career began its unstoppable ascent. From the 1940s onward, the devastatingly gorgeous singer/actress/dancer appeared in a number of films and musicals including Panama Hattie, Cabin in the Sky, Ziegfeld Follies and (a personal favorite) The Wiz.

It’s no secret that this mind-blowing icon embodies every bit of class and refined elegance. Within every picture, Horne literally oozed a chic yet timeless aura; more specifically, this Vintage Vision definitely had a knack for bold accessories, structured pieces and even subtle prints. From her signature one-shoulder gowns to her favorite pinstriped suits, her style continues to inspire fashionistas to this present day. At the mere mention of her name, the idea of flawless beauty and images of jaw-dropping silhouettes immediately flood my mind! Lena Horne was the epitome of how a lady should present herself and, through her influence, she managed to cultivate a legacy that communicates that exact message. Aside from her incomparable style, let’s get into these hair adornments! I live!

Want to know more about the courageous Lena Horne? Well, take a cue from from me and take a quick detour here. I’m telling you, there is much more to this woman than meets the eye.  Did you know she participated as an activist in the Civil Rights Movement? Did you also know she worked alongside political heavyweights including Medgar Evers and Eleanor Roosevelt?
Her style is a triumph but her story is legendary.
