Kylie Jenner Tries on Fall’s Mod Beauty Trends: Take
one look at Kylie Jenner’s Instagram account, and it’s clear that she’s
mastered the selfie and is well-aware of which angles best display her
genetically blessed features, like that bee-stung pout and perfect bone
structure. “It’s all about good lighting, usually by a window with
diffused light, and finding your best angles,” says Jenner. “Just take a
bunch of photos, you can always erase.” But for a refreshing change,
Jenner stepped away from her own camera and let us do all the
picture-taking at our ‘60s mod-inspired Byrdie feature shoot.
As the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, she’s picked up a
few beauty tricks over the years. What’s the best tip she learned from
her sisters? “Always apply sunscreen to your face and hands every day.”
At just 17 years old, Jenner already has a unique personal style—lucky
for us, though, she’s also a risk-taker. In the capable hands of
hairstylist Christian Marc and makeup artist Sage Maitri, the dark-haired beauty was more than willing to embrace their bold and dare we say edgy retro hair and makeup looks.
“This look is a take on the classic wing, but we did it in this blue, Lime Crime Eyeliner ($14)
in Blue Milk,” Maitri says. To make the eye really pop, Maitri added
lots of individual lashes throughout, and a semi-strip of lashes at the
outer corners. To top it off, Maitri smudged black cream eyeliner at the
base of the lashes to make them appear more doll-like and fluttery. On
the lip, Maitri wanted something that wouldn’t compete with the blue
hue, so she used Lancôme’s Rouge in Love Lipstick ($29) in Rosemantic, a soft pink shade, and pressed it into the lips with her finger.
For the hair, the feeling was late ‘60s.
“Very undone, nothing polished,” Marc says. He worked with Jenner’s
natural wave and added salt spray and dry shampoo to enhance the
texture.
Two words: glitter eyes. For Jenner’s
sparkling lids, Maitri ditched the eyeliner and gave the lids a
pinky-tangerine base. She topped the soft shadow with Make Up For Ever Glitter ($15) in the multicolored silver shade 13. Maitri blended Nars’ Audacious Lipstick ($32) in Claudia and Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ Lip Tar ($18)
in Digitalis to achieve the SweeTarts-inspired shade of lilac. The rest
of the makeup was kept understated with glowy skin and candy-colored
lips.
Marc left the bangs loose for this French
twist (which showed Jenner’s new undercut in the back). He didn’t want
the hair to look too polished, so he stayed away from product. The key
was the side part with a gentle tease at the crown.

For Jenner’s inky black cat-eye, Maitri used Chanel’s Écriture De Chanel Eyeliner Pen ($35).
To create the graphic shape, Maitri says to catch the angle where your
eye meets your eyebrow, and use that as your starting point for your
line. Maitri describes all of Jenner’s beauty looks as “modern mod”,
which balances the retro feel with something more current. In this case,
it was the combination of the graphic eyeliner and fresh lip color,
like the shocking pink pigment of Nars’Lipstick ($26)
in Schiap. The hue was perfect for Jenner, a self-proclaimed lipstick
lover, who says she’s “definitely a lip girl. I love all different
shades of pinks and browns.”
In keeping with the late ‘60s vibe, Marc
pulled the hair off the face in a loose, undone bun. First, he created
volume with a large-barrel curling iron. Next, he teased the top section
to give the look some height. Then, he smoothed the sides back and
secured everything with a few bobby pins.
