The makeup we can expect to see this fall runs the gamut: everything from barely-there to playful primary colors guaranteed to grab attention. As always, the devil is in the details, and while seemingly anything goes, the one constant was precision: whether precise lines, or precisely perfect un-makeup in the form of exquisitely glowing skin.
I’ve rounded up the top five fall makeup looks from New York and London Fashion weeks to keep you totally on-trend in 2017.
GLOWING SKIN
As seen at: Michael Kors, Lela Rose, and Emilia Wickstead
One of the most popular looks on the fall runways was beautiful, glowing skin; skin boasting the kind of gorgeous flush that almost feels naughty. To get the look, try a sheer BB cream that lets skin breathe while still creating a naturally airbrushed complexion. Finish off the dewiness with flushed cheeks, courtesy of a cream blush in a rosy shade.
Try BB cream like It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream ($38) or Maybelline New York Dream Fresh BB Cream ($5), and cream blush like Bare Minerals Blush in Fruit Cocktail ($21) or e.l.f. Beautifully Bare Blush in Rose Royalty ($4).
RED EYELINER
As seen at: Oscar de la Renta, Zadig & Voltaire in New York, and House of Holland in London
Look-at-me, attention-grabbing eyes were huge on runways, especially in New York, where bold, geometric shapes on upper lids reigned supreme. Create the strong lines and precise angles with a liquid liner, building up the width of the line as you go for a fiery red frame.
Try red eyeliner like NYX Cosmetics Vivid Brights Liner in Vivid Fire ($7) or Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner Liquid Eyeliner in Iridescent Red ($23).
TEAL MANICURE
As seen at: Philip Lim in New York and Jasper Conran in London
Talon-like nails have been especially popular for several seasons now, but at both New York and London Fashion weeks, another big trend was short, round nails in a bright teal shade. The pendulum has swung back from matte to glossy, so try topping polish with a shiny top coat like Sally Hansen Super Shine Shiny Top Coat ($4) or Nails Inc. 45 Second Top Coat with Kensington Caviar ($15).
Try teal nail polish like Essie Nail Polish in Strut Your Stuff ($9) or OPI Teal the Cows Come Home ($10).
CREAMY CHERRY RED LIPS
As seen at: Zero + Maria Cornejo & Philip Plein in New York, and Topshop Unique & Preen in London
No surprise here: red lips ruled the runways. This season’s look is different from red lips of yore, however. Instead of a perfectly matte texture, the new red is creamy and sometimes even slightly smudged—as if you’ve just finished kissing.
Try creamy red lipstick like CoverGirl Colorlicious Lipstick in Succulent Cherry ($6) or Nars Cosmetics Audacious Lipstick in Grace ($34).
SMUDGY BLACK EYELINER
As seen at: Nicole Miller in New York and PPQ in London
A classic look that is always en vogue, black eyeliner is at its most current when it’s smudgy and soft. Keep the rest of your makeup clean and lips bare to make the look modern, not grungy.
Try black pencil eyeliner like Rimmel Kohl Kajal Waterproof Eyeliner ($4) or Chanel Le Crayon Yeux in Noir ($30).
