Adam Selman Fall 2015.
Novice: A word that must have been obliterated from the verbal repertoire of editors, buyers, and celebs who looked on as Adam Selman exhaled his fourth collection down the runway. And after his now infamous titillating CFDA Award gown he designed for none other than Rihanna, it couldn’t be any clearer that Selman has cemented his position in the fashion industry. His affinity for all things retro and coquettish always takes precedence in his design aesthetic, and this time proved no different. Nevertheless, he’s no one-trick pony.
Models sashayed down the catwalk with bare faces and beehive hairstyles that paid homage to late actress and writer Cookie Mueller, who was famed for her sassy demeanor and unconventional hair colors, evidenced by his latest offerings. Polos, knit separates, and sweater dresses were dotted with tiny bows and uplifted by ultra feminine trimmings on sleeves and collars: a perfect marriage of saucy meets ladylike, especially given the use of flattering kitten heels on bobby socks.
A host of gingham pieces peeked through this season’s assortment, highlighting a burgeoning trend that shows little signs of slowing down. Selman emblazoned the pattern on functional separates in the vein of trousers, skirts, sheath dresses and luxe trench coats. Avoiding a host of darker hues, usually typecast during pre-fall and fall seasons, Selman opted for a brighter color palette to maintain the upbeat aura surrounding this season’s assortment.
Comfort and sensuality also played important roles in encapsulating Selman’s vision for this collection. Ribbed tops paired with flirty skirts with thigh grazing slits and pleats were exhibited, affording ease and versatility as far as getting dressed is concerned.
What would an Adam Selman collection be without a few printed selections? Dainty shirtdresses had a dash of pizazz thrown into the mix seamlessly as a ribbon like graphic etched its way all over them. And tops with cheeky wording underline Selman’s almost incessant need to reiterate how all things fashion shouldn’t be taken so seriously.
Fuzzy outerwear equipped this collection with alternatives to fur and leather. Sweaters and belted dresses championed the looks of this segment, providing an option for the PETA friendly fashionista whose main goals during those frigid months of December to April are to stay warm and look undeniably chic.
Though his evening gowns weren’t replete with thousands of gems, they were, undoubtedly, eye catching. Dresses in blacks and greens were elevated by sultry slits and a becoming wave like trim were perfect looks for red carpet movie premieres or press junkets: the likes of Zendaya and Zoe Saldana would be clamoring to get their lithe frames into. And who else but muse, Rihanna, could he have envisioned designing a velvet double-slit dress for with accompanying sheer polka-dot gloves?
While it’s safe to say this is collection was filled with enough quirk and early 1960’s flair to leave Zoe Deschanel’s New Girl character in the dust, Selman’s fall assemblage showcased the need for women to inject personality and a hint of nostalgia into the wardrobes of women who want something new while exuding vintage allure. Selman is clearly improving season after season and expanding his audience, but the “sassy yet classy” girl we can’t get enough of seems to hold a special place in his heart.
What say you to Adam Selma’s latest?
