Tom Ford Fall 2015.

L.A. is the place to be this weekend for the 87th Academy Awards, thus it wasn’t a big surprise that Tom Ford moved his runway show from across the pond in London to the City of Angels. The designs were strapped with that signature Ford sexiness and heat, while a star-studded crowd (including a few Best Actress nominees) watched from the front row — in the brand’s sultry looks of course.

The catwalk was covered in white rose petals — harking back to Ford’s final collection for Gucci in 2004. The choice to stage the collection in L.A. was a great one, as there was a breezy and sunny vibe to the clothes. The brand’s designs will never be in a word “attainable”, but there were definitely some more pedestrian elements at play that diverged from the usual polished, audacious, and controlled pieces that have become synonymous with the name Tom Ford.

Though he’s become the king of sexpot fashion, Ford actually grew up in Santa Fe, thus the bohemian tinge to the assortment was simply pulling in a few memories from his childhood. Some looks even appeared handcrafted: fringed tiered dresses and skirts that brought all new meaning to Wild Wild West, a mixed texture chevron print pencil skirt, and crochet, figure-hugging numbers that were far from anything your grandmother has ever made.

Tiered frocks and peplum blouses didn’t feel much like Ford, but they were pretty, possessed a pared-down charm, and were most importantly, wearable. The statement-making black jewelry and black calf hair boots accenting the ensembles will surely becoming retail hits.

Denim was far from mundane and 70’s chic — with ocelot panels on curve-hugging pencil skirts and cozy jackets. The get-ups became quite overwhelming with feather-accented earrings, metal chain link shoulder bags, and strappy sandals, but at this point, we’ve all been well trained in Ford’s brand of excess.

Eveningwear was punctuated by sheer mesh, embellishment, velvet, and barely-covered detailing. We’re certain that more than a few Hollywood starlets in the crowd are eyeing a gown or two for tomorrow’s main event.
