Mary Katrantzou first hit the scene as the Queen of Digital Prints in Spring / Summer 2009. Her background in architecture and textile design had her uniquely positioned to produce delightfully multi-dimensional collections that brought the best of print and thoughtful construction. After seven years of presenting at London Fashion Week, Katrantzou’s Fall 2015 Collection felt right in stride with its storied heritage.
As soon as I saw the runway, I knew this collection was going to be all about fun. The eggshell crate and pink foam padding was dangerously soft, I was worried the models might trip and fall on the surface, but they glided with ease in ankle-grazing skirts, cropped trousers, and strapless ensembles.
The accessories were decidedly Lego-like, echoing the floor’s surface, in the same pastel palette of light yellow and baby pink. Emerald-shaped medallions hung off the hips and waists of fur coats and party dresses. Some of Katrantzou’s digital printing heritage could be seen in the toggled long coats in blue and green and in the cinched skirts in bright yellow and black.
My favorite pieces were the varied jumper quilted knits with flowing skirts. The silhouettes felt fresh and powerful. The palette increasingly became jewel-toned and more three-dimensional. The fur jackets adopted floral cutouts. Plastic rosettes, hexagonal imprints, and pointy fringe collars adorned the looks in healthy doses.
The energy behind the show was playful and her pieces touched at the quirky in our wardrobes. In my mind, a job well done!
