Gucci Ready-to-Wear Fall 2015.
Anyone watching fashion breaking news was stunned to hear of Creative Director Frida Giannini and CEO Patrizio di Marco’s early leaving Gucci without so much as a goodbye card in December 2014. Gucci came under swift leadership from Marco Bizzarri and quickly appointed a new Creative Director, an insider by the name of Alessandro Michele. Gucci’s Fall 2015 RTW Collection, led by Michele, presented a fresh yet familiar take on Italian fashion. There was the subtle return of the interlocking “G” logo and classic leather loafers, but there was also new inspirations using fur in footwear and the inclusion of male models in decidedly feminine attire.
Overall, the collection embodied a very sensual sentiment and included sheer blouses, rich leather suits, casual berets, oversized glasses, and red bows with bumblebee motifs. It was part innocent, part provocateur. The tomboyish and school girl aesthetic continued throughout the looks — winter hats, long scarfs, and sweater vests added to this super fashionable “back-to-school” theme.
A few items clearly weren’t designed for back-to-school, most obviously, the lace see-through tanks and dresses in black and beige. However, Michele balanced those pieces out with bold floral dresses with ruffles for days and varied power suits in a traditional fall color palette (red, maroon, crimson, brown, cream, maple, and burgundy among others). One super cool dress was a black jersey dress with a embellished appliqué of a sparrow. I could do without the head wrap, but the dress was phenomenal in its uniqueness and ease of wear.
What I especially appreciated about this collection was the narrative element. Michele was weaving a story about the Gucci woman and her interests — whether it be in a full fur coat and beret or in a tiny lace party dress with pom-pom lace-ups. He offered something for everyone, especially the younger woman. Military coats and mandarin collar blazers were matched with slouchy pants and pleated skirts. He even included little flowers in a few of the looks, a signal of his embrace of youth culture.
