Show Review: Moschino Spring 2015.
We’re all just Barbie girls in a Barbie world…right? Well, Jeremy Scott seems to think so. His Spring collection for Moschino was inspired by the beauty, with models becoming the human and extremely stylish embodiment of her. With the iconic Italian fashion house’s McDonald’s by Moschino and Spongebob themed looks last season, we all had no idea what to expect and we were certainly in for a treat: a pink one at that.
Front-rowers were treated to a special edition Moschino barbie doll, while those not as high priority when it came to the seating chart were given pink iPhone 5 cases shaped like hand mirrors: the excitement was palpable showing that adults are never too young for Barbie dolls. The fast food and cartoon craze that Scott so effortlessly created last season was swept away in all things girly and rose-colored.
The first model emerged in a long blonde wig and a hot pink leather biker cropped jacket, high-waist pencil skirt, and shoulder bag. It was the ultimate mélange of high and low and we could tell from the onset that it was going to be kitschy, but impossible to resist.
In a word: it was fun. The fun the fashion industry sometimes forgets to have, especially during a grueling month of shows across the globe. The brand’s script logo in pink and white was sprawled everywhere including gym-ready sweat bands (not that we’d ever wear them to workout), tracksuits, weights, and bikini tops. A rolling suitcase with the emblem will be perfect for private jet passengers only: a bag of that price and flash is not by any means befitting of baggage claim.
The accessories were practically made for Instagram: a yellow rubber camera that could work as a necklace or bag, peace sign hoops, pump-covered totes, and bejeweled cat eye shades. Chain link leather strap purses featured the brand’s colorful logo in resin block leathers and took on the shape of inflatable pool toys, giving way to chain links blown up on necklaces and belts.
Scott wants the Moschino woman to go to the pool and beach heavily for the season: or to bring along her new goodies from the fashion house while jetsetting to Capri or the Caribbean. French terry looks from the brand will make this possible including a printed halter top, wrap skirt with a thigh-high slit, biker number, and retro-inspired jacket.
There are a handful of designers who like to poke fun at fashion’s snobby attitude, but we really haven’t seen anything this playful since…Scott’s last show. Much of it looked cheesy and it all did beg the question of what can the brand really do next after this collection, but overall, it was enjoying and entertaining. And let’s face it: no one wants to be the bellyacher who can’t lighten up and have a good time. There’s no doubt that fans of the brand will snatch these looks up like hot cakes and we’re most intrigued by how celebrities and the world’s most stylish will don these numbers on the street.
Thoughts on Moschino’s Spring offerings?
