Show Review: Dsquared2 Spring 2015.
Dean and Dan Caten love an outré backdrop — psychiatric wards and speakeasies have been among them. Well, that wasn’t the case for Dsquared2’s latest collection which was presented in the setting of the loft of a New York artist: achromatic to allow the designs to play centerstage. It was all about putting their own spin on traditional forms with bold colors, interesting shapes, and contrasting proportions.
It was all very impressive as the design duo filled the collection with functional looks that by no means abandoned their trademark playfulness. Volume played on colorful hot pants with exaggerated hips, roomy bright totes, crop tops with waterfall hems, and high-waist full maxi skirts in Art Deco-inspired colorblock circle patterns. Eye-catching hues were everywhere from royal blue leather mini skirts to a pink and turquoise embellished bikini.
The Catens committed to wearable ensembles with a slew of bottoms including longer-line shorts in the aforementioned head-turning circle print, turquoise leather seamed cropped trousers, wide-leg embellished pants that were low-slung to reveal branded logo briefs, and sweat shorts layered over bejeweled skinnies for a sporty glam look. Emerald silky trousers were paired with an adorned hoodie, exotic skin handbag, and blue strappy sandals for a tomboy chic getup, while adorned hot pants, a voluminous crop top, and feather sandals were the kind of outfit that would have all eyes on its wearer.
Nonchalant looks were given fanciful flair with a yellow feather mini skirt coupled with a bedecked short-sleeve tee, a top cut just above the belly button married with a ruffled maxi skirt, a frothy textured coat layered over boyfriend jeans, and a cropped jean jacket worn with a long skirt in the same aforementioned fluffy embellishment. A gold leather peplum jacket felt down-to-earth with roomy denim and a floor-grazing patterned coat was thrown over a crop top and jean shorts.
Will this collection get you noticed? Absolutely. It wouldn’t be a Dsquared2 lineup without that element. Fortunately for all of us, practicality was at an all-time high here which means putting a few coins toward these looks will be well worth it in the long run.
