Show Review: Prabal Gurung Spring 2015
“Global trekker” was the inspiration behind Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2015 collection: something that hit close to home as the designer was raised in Nepal which isn’t too far removed from the Himalayas. A frigid expedition is what the brand had in mind as white ensembles cracked through the initial suspense that was palpable before the assortment’s first look hit the runway. Accents of aquamarine infused bits of color — perchance an allusion to the blue sky that sits right upon the caps of mountains.
Prints plunged the collection further into that trek sensibility with landscape and mountain patterns strewn across zip-front jackets and teasing dresses.
No stylish odyssey around the world would be complete without mesh, thus the sporty chic material was utilized on knits that could be worn in any terrain: punctuated by bold colors, asymmetrical hems, and unexpected jolts of stripes. A menswear-inspired suit is a go-to for Gurung each season, so those were also introduced in color blocking — sure to standout in any location.
The designs shown channeled more of a contained sensuality than we’ve seen from the brand in the past, but the pieces still felt very crisp and energetic. Just when we all thought Gurung was becoming comfortable in his signature aesthetic, he switched it up: a pleasant and electrifying surprise.
