How To Make Your Makeup Last In Sizzling Summer Heat
Summer might be the most fun time of the year—full of parties, barbecues, and QT relaxing outdoors with friends and family—but it can be hell on your makeup. After all, even the most well-constructed beauty look can fall apart in the baking sun, leaving your gorgeously glam face resembling a goopy, oily mess.
Luckily, with a few expert tips and tricks, you can easily help keep your makeup in place, even in triple digit heat. (Thanks but no thanks, global warming.)
Here, the best ways to keep your makeup looking cool in the blazing summer heat.
FACE
In the summer, skin will look fresher for longer if you ditch the heavy powder—which can easily look cakey—in favor of a more lightweight cream or liquid formula. Try a workhorse, skin-tone evening BB cream, such as (1.) Diorskin Nude BB Cream ($45), (2.) Iman Skin Tone Evener BB Cream ($13), or (3.) Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream ($7)—which has the added bonus of containing your SPF. (Sunscreen is notorious for making skin look oily, but BB creams already have them built in.) After applying your BB cream, use blotting papers—such as (4.) Shiseido Pureness Oil-Control Blotting Papers ($19) or (5.) Too Cool For School Dinoplatz Dear Brachiosaurus Blotting Paper ($8) to remove any excess moisture. (And, in a pinch, toilet-seat covers work to blot oil, too!) For cheeks, instead of a powder blush, choose a more natural-looking-in-the-heat cream blush such as (6.) Make Up For Ever HD Cream Blush ($26) or (7.) NYX Professional Makeup High Definition Blush ($7)—ideally in a coral shade, for a looks-good-on-everybody, just-back-from-the-beach summer flush.
And, of course, starting off your makeup routine with a makeup setting spray, such (8.) Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray ($31), (9.) Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water ($32) or (10.) L’Oreal Paris Infallible Pro Matte Spray and Set ($8) will help keep skin free of added shine throughout the day.
EYES
Nothing’s worse than that smudged, tacky goop that appears on eyelids halfway through the day in excessive heat. Combat it with a one-two-three punch of primer plus cream shadow plus powder. For summer 2017, the best colors are bronzed and with a hint of shimmer, so try first applying a cream shadow—like (11.) Clinique Chubby Stick Shadow Tint in Lots ‘O Latte ($17) (12.) The Estee Edit Metallishadow Crème + Powder in Light Speed ($19), or (13.) Giorgio Armani Beauty Eye Tint in Gold Copper ($39)—layered on top with a powder shadow in a similar bronzed shade, such as (14.) Anastasia Beverly Hills in Penny Metal ($12), (15.) Sephora Collection Eyeshadow in Tropical Queen ($10), or (16.) Buxom Eyeshadow in Mink Magnet ($12). Bonus points if you start with an eye shadow primer—such as (17.) Milani Eyeshadow Primer ($6) or (18.) Too Faced Shadow Insurance ($20), and finish with a waterproof mascara (such as (19.) IT Cosmetics Tightline Waterproof Full Lash Length Black Mascara Primer ($24) or (20.) Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof Mascara ($7).
LIPS
While the optimal summer pout is soft and kissable—i.e., wearing nothing at all—sometimes wearing a little extra color on your lips is a must. During those moments, keep your lip-look lasting longer by reaching for a lip stain. It works well on its own, and is an ideal long-lasting base if you’d like to amp up the look with a dose of liquid lipstick—in a trendy shade such as crimson or neon orange, natch. Start with (22.) Benefit Benetint Lip Stain ($12) or (23.) e.l.f. Essential Lip Stain in Crimson Crush ($1), and then layer on a matte liquid lipstick such as (24.) Kylie Cosmetics Mary Jo K ($17), (25.) Burberry Liquid Lip Velvet in Bright Crimson ($34), (26.) Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor in Flirtation ($6), or (27.) Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in A-Go-Go ($20).
Finally, patting a small amount of translucent powder on top of the lipstick will further help the color to last much longer and prevent it from bleeding and fading in the heat. Our favorites are (28.) Coty Airspun Loose Powder ($6) or (29.) Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder ($23).
