Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel Spring 2015 Couture Collection was an ode to spring, in a most literal sense, but that didn’t make it any less beautiful. Leading the pack was wunderkind male model Baptiste Giabiconi, who donned a rarely seen scruffy beard and had his straw hat and watering can handy. It got us thinking what type of mischief might be in store for Chanel’s fantasy garden.
From fitted gowns to mid-riff baring crop tops, this garden party had ensembles for every type of lady in no less than 74 looks. Lagerfeld gave us storm clouds overhead with straw hats wrapped in black tulle, early buds rising with sequined beanies in warm pastels, and straight-up sunshine with flowers in full bloom from head to toe.
It wouldn’t be a Chanel show without signature suiting and this presentation was no different – Lagerfeld paired tone-on-tone saturated oranges, blues, yellows, pinks, and greens in varied jacket and skirt combinations. Showing the softer side of spring, there were a number of more muted looks in light pinks, purples, creams, and blacks, each accompanied by a hat that seemed to have sprung from the earth.
The jackets appeared to be getting shorter and shorter this season while the skirts got longer and longer. The waists were bare, but cinched together by rather long belts that trailed the length of the skirts. It was a new take on the classic skirt suit, but perhaps not the most appropriate for your next business meeting!
What may be inspiration for your next meeting (or cocktail party) was the solid use of mixed materials and multi-dimensional textures in the looks. Tweed made its usual appearance, but there were also sequins, bejeweled buttons, netted masks, sheer-on-sheer gowns in bold reds and pinks, crisscrossed fabrics, lace sleeves, honeycomb-inspired coats and great flowers adorning shoulders, pockets, and trims in every color imaginable. Chanel’s fantasy garden party was truly a couture show of dreams.
