Nina Simone.
This legend needs no introduction – she’s served as a jazz music pioneer, an avid civil rights activist and a brilliant songwriter. Her incomparable talent has earned her quite the following and her signature style has also helped to influence style mavens everywhere.
Without further ado, join me as we gaze upon the fashionable musings of the great Nina Simone!
Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, Nina Simone was born on February 21, 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina. As the sixth of eight children, she began playing piano at the tender age of three. Although her family struggled financially, she was determined to further cultivate her growing talent – the young chanteuse eventually landed a singing gig at the Midtown Bar and Grill in Atlantic City and, from there, she began her professional ascent. Some of Simone’s monumental works include “I Put A Spell On You“, “Feeling Good” and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood“. Artists who have cited Simone’s musical influence include Kanye West, Alicia Keys, and Lauryn Hill.
Nina Simone’s style is often copied but, let’s face it, there is no duplicating originality! The soulful siren was known for her eccentric yet chic ensembles. Her ability to mix bold colors and statement prints has solidified her place as a fashion powerhouse. While browsing endless photos of our Vintage Vision, it was quite evident that her go-to accessories included chunky jewelry, daring headwraps, perfectly placed headbands and flowy maxi dresses. In addition to that astounding voice and an unparalleled beauty, she’s beyond worthy of bombshell status.
Slay, Nina! I’m here everything!
