Halston Heritage Pre-Fall 2015.
Halston is a brand made of some legendary stuff — fearless and confident, enticing and elegant, with allure and star quality practically intertwined in its genetic code. For the Pre-Fall 2015 collection of the brand’s Heritage line, designer Marie Mazelis harked back to the archives that Roy Halston built so many years ago. She was especially intrigued by a feather wig hat in a pretty powder blue and that glamorous accoutrement gave way to rather functional offerings.
Mazelis translated her inspiration through a wispy and fresh feather print on a silky dress with a front slit, a belted pencil skirt with the same sultry detail, a wearable one-shoulder top that could easily work from day to night, and a tiered frock with architectural tiers. The season calls for a good knee-high suede boot, but the pairing wasn’t the perfect complement to many of the looks. Other accessories like thin metal collars and bucket bags were also great wardrobe additions, but didn’t add anything to many of the ensembles on display.
The designs teetered between gussied up and casual. A collarless belted coat and blush pink sequin dress with keyhole detailing were undeniably sophisticated, while a sleeveless vest paired with cropped, cargo pocket-accented trousers was mundane save for the embellished cami layered underneath. Halston has always been about glamorous looks that women could both wear comfortably and feel good in, but there were a few moments here which were just shy of achieving that mission.
Caution and simplicity sometimes seem to be the antithesis of fashion, but Mazelis held onto them tightly here. A jacket languidly draped over a turtleneck and pencil skirt was simple, yet effective, while a breezy maxi dress with side slits was far from groundbreaking, but was still absolutely charming in its approach.
Next season, Mazelis will certainly need to determine her own special iteration of Halston’s signature aesthetic and present that firmly and securely because her point of view felt a bit disjointed and unanchored. The brand’s past few years have been plagued with uncertainty, so it would be nice to finally see someone restore its name.
