Prince.
Change is always good, right?
I figured it would be a little more fitting to credit (not only iconic women of color but) men as well! Throughout my consistent research for these posts, I’ve come across a majority of fashionable gentlemen who deserve to be highlighted. I am beyond confident that this will add a bit more diversity and fun to the mix – it’s always nice to enjoy fashion from both sides of the spectrum!
So, what better way to start our inaugural male feature than to muse upon the greatness of the one and only Prince!
Prince Rogers Nelson was born on June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With a father who worked as a pianist/songwriter and a mother who housed the talent of song, it seems that music was etched deep within his genes. Although his parents separated early on, Prince somehow managed to continually groom and cultivate his dynamic talent. By high school, he joined his first band which consisted of close friends and Morris Day – Prince played guitar and piano. In the mid-to-late1980s, the young star’s career was at its peak. With hits including “Little Red Corvette“, “When Doves Cry“, “Purple Rain” and “Kiss”, he was nearly impossible to stop.
Prince’s style evolution started at the base of his career. He was introduced to the world rocking that enviable ‘fro, bell bottoms and platforms; however, as he grew as an artist, his style journey continued its ascent. Prince’s signature looks included embellished suits, flamboyant prints, lots of ruffles, sequins, bold jackets, elaborate accessories and his curly coif. When the mention of “individual style” comes into question, there’s no doubt that this man truly encompassed a look that helped define his artistry for generations to come.
Wow! If this is your first time discovering the sartorial awesomeness of Prince, I can only suggest that you read up on your history! His music and unique style remain relevant to this day – I guarantee he’ll leave you captivated!
