Zendaya Coleman’s ESSENCE Black Women In Music 2015’s Sergio Hudson Spring 2015 Black And White Polka Dot Bodysuit And Color Blocked Pencil Skirt.

I am a big fan of Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach. He’s smart, he has an eye and he understands the business of fashion. A few seasons ago he brought Zendaya to Manhattan for New York Fashion Week and much like Lupita’s storm during award’s season last year, the industry and the world sat up and took notice. So when he decided for the ESSENCE Black Women In Music awards to defer on a big name and tap a designer of color for the pop star’s look, we had to give it up to him.
Let’s take a look at Zendaya’s look: a hand-painted black and white polka dot body suit and geometrically color blocked pencil skirt, both from Sergio Hudson’s Spring 2015 collection.


The name Sergio Hudson may mean nothing to you or it might ring faint bells. The Columbia, SC based designer — he’s from this writer’s hometown! — won Rihanna’s Styled To Rock competition and has been getting pieces on the likes of Nicki Minaj, Keke Palmer and longtime supporter Lisa Wu. For his aesthetic, he tends for the dramatic with voluminous couture like silhouettes. At least he did for the longest and now he seems to reigning things in for the last few seasons.

Hudson is practically a fashion historian, always giving respect to the greats like Giannini Versace, Christian Dior and Franco Moschino, the latter from which he likely drew inspiration for this look. But of course, that’s what we’re here to talk about: the look.  The bodysuit as top is cute, the off the shoulder neckline skewing sexy/flirty while the polka dot print screams fun, making it appropriate for the young and sexy starlet.

The problem — well my problem at least — comes in the skirt. It’s likely an aesthetics thing but the shapes seem a little off kilter. While I do love the coloration of having a primary colored bright pencil skirt since the top is black and white, the shape of the pattern doesn’t sit entirely right with this writer. That said, the shot of Zendaya sitting is everything!
